Geocaching!!

Hey Everyone! Here is the email confirming that our geocache is out there for everyone to come and find.

Here are some pictures!

Reflection:
Geocaching is something that I had heard about from a teacher back at MCC. It was an alternative assignment to paint balling. I chose to go paint balling and never did try the geocaching. Fast forward a year and a half later, an assignment led me again to geocaching, this time without an opt out. I downloaded the $9.99 app and since then haven't looked back. I'm up over 40 finds and enjoying each new find and challenge that comes with it. I've even introduced a friend to the scavenger hunt for these little gems. The experience is fantastic and it's even better now with our own geocache out there. I even put a trackable out there, and now I get to see where is goes each time that it is found. Happy Hunting!!

Lesson Content:
(Students standing in front of me in a U shape)
Good Morning everyone, I hope that you had a great weekend. Today’s lesson will be working on shooting a soccer ball, specifically working on hitting your target. Before we start, I want to go over a few safety concerns. Due to the snow, please either change your sneakers, or wipe them down to get them as dry as possible. Please make sure your sneakers are tied at all time, so as to not trip. When playing, please do not kick the soccer ball in anyone’s face, or to anyone who is not paying attention. Lastly, please no one retrieve a soccer ball out of the net until everyone has kicked their soccer ball. My start and stop signals I will just say start and stop. How does everyone feel from a scale of 1-10 shooting a soccer ball?
(students give answers)
First, we will demonstrate how to properly shoot a soccer ball. Would anyone like to volunteer?
(Volunteer comes up)
(Step by step process demonstration)
When kicking a soccer ball, it is important to have the proper technique.
- Approach the ball from a few steps back.
- Your non-dominant foot, also known as your plant foot, should be placed next to the ball, with it pointing in the direction in which you want to kick the ball.
- Your upper body, or trunk is slightly bent over the ball, with your eyes on the ball.
- Your shooting foot, should start behind you, knee bent, foot and ankle locked, toes pointed down.
- Bring your leg and foot forward, kicking the ball with your laces and follow through to target with hip rotation.
- Everyone grab a partner and a ball. In two lines, I want everyone to line up across their partner about 10 yards. Take aim at your partner’s hands, not their face, and lightly kick the soccer ball to them, focusing on the technique. Take 10 shots to your partner then switch off.
(Spend about 5 minutes on drill)
(Circle around class, give pointers)
(Call everyone in)
Ok, everyone! We are now going to play a game called lollipop. We will be split the group into 2, one at each net. The purpose of the game is to hit the crossbar of the net. When you do hit  it, shout out lollipop. Keep tally of how many times you hit the crossbar. Have everyone line up in front of the next at would be approximately the 18 yard line. Take caution, please no one retrieve their soccer ball until everyone has had a turn.
(Split class into 2 groups, have them disperse to designated nets)
(Spend about 5 -10 minutes, depending on time)
(Bring everyone in, U shape)
Closure:
- Everyone bring it in!  Please take your heart rate. I’ll count to 6. (count to 6).I hope that you enjoyed today’s lesson. How many lollipops did everyone get? Can anyone tell me at least 1 cue for kicking a soccer ball properly? Would anyone like to show me how to kick a soccer ball? On a scale from 1-10 how does everyone feel about kicking a soccer ball after this lesson?
(Students answer)
- Thanks everyone and have a great rest of day!

- Me: Morning everybody, how are we today?

- Class: Good

- Me: Little more enthusiastic guys, good morning everybody!

- Class: Good Morning

  • Me: There we go. Ok so today we are going to be working on soccer, specifically we are going to be working on shooting. So, little safety concerns make sure your sneakers are dry because I know its been nice and snowy out there, and , uh, also be aware when we are shooting today, please don’t kick to anybody that is unaware. Make sure that your partner is paying attention or anybody else that you are kicking the soccer ball, and also say with our shooting drill make sure you don’t retrieve a soccer ball until everybody has shot the soccer ball because we don’t want anybody getting hit. Make sure your shoe laces are tied at all times as well. My start and stop signals, (stutter) I’m just going to say really loudly to start and to stop. So please pay attention, keep your ears open at all times. So, would anybody like to volunteer and show me, and go step by step on how to kick a soccer ball properly.

  • Me: Thank you, and your name.
  • Student: Max
  • Me: Thank you Max. Ok, I’m going to put the soccer ball right here for you. Ok. So, when kicking a soccer ball, specifically shooting, you always start a few steps back. Ok, as you can see he kind of angled himself to get a proper shot. When you’re approaching the ball, your non-dominant foot, or your plant foot, is always  going to be next to the soccer ball and pointing to your target. So if he is pointing at the bleachers, his foot would be pointing at the bleachers. Now your kicking foot is going to be back, knee slightly bent, your toes and your ankle, your ankles’ locked, toes pointing down, and you want to get a pendulum swing going. And then when you go to kick the soccer ball, you kick with your laces not your toes guys, your laces, and follow through just as he demonstrated. Do we have any questions on that? Ok so I want everybody to grab a partner and a soccer ball please, and then I want you guys to line up on this black line right here. On the black line right here.

- Me: Quickly guys, quickly, quickly, quickly, let’s move. I want your partner on the black line. Hold the soccer balls please, hold the soccer balls.

  • Me: Alright, I want one partner on the black line and I want the other partner about right here, even with me. I want all the soccer balls on this side please. Ok, so what we are going to be doing is your each going to take 5 shots to your partner on this side. I want you to practice aiming at your hands. My friends on this side I want your hands in kind of like a W, like a goalie does. Aim at their hands, not at their face. Please, we want to be as safe possible. Ok, take 5 shots on this side going this way and then switch it up and your partners will go this way. Make sure you keep in mind your technique guys. Ok, Ready? Start!

  • Me: Aim for his hands, aim for the hands.
  • Me (instructing student): Make sure when you're kicking, make sure you're bringing your leg back. You want to bring it back like this. And make sure your toes are pointing down but when you kick, kick with right here. OK, you want to kick the soccer ball right here, you don’t want to kick the ground ok because we don’t want you to hurt your ankle.

  • Me (instructing student #2): W, W, W, W like this.
  • Me (instructing student # 3): Make sure you’re not kicking with your toes, we don’t want you to hurt your toes ok. Laces, so when you bring your foot back make sure your toes are pointed down so when you kick its with your laces. You don’t want to hit the ground, so hit right about in there ok?

  • Me: That’s better, that’s better!

  • Me: Christine, stop the ball. When you guys are done, hold onto the soccer ball!
  • Me: Doing alright there? Don’t hit Melissa, it’s not extra points. Hold the soccer ball in your hands when you’re done! Doing alright there? If you’re done hold the succorable in your hand please!

  • Me: Alright, we all done? Christine that was your toes, and I asked you to hold the soccer ball when you were done. Ok. Alright, can you guys bring it into me please? Make sure no one is behind me please. OK, so we are going to play another game to practice with your shooting with your partner. We’re going to play a game called lollipop. You’re going to keep track of points because a prize is at stake. I actually do have the prizes here and there is also candy here for you guys as well. So, the game is called lollipop, you have targets and we are going to be using that back wall over there. So, I’m going to walk over this way, you guys follow me. So, there is 1 point, 2 point, or 3 points and you’re going to have, one partner is going to go first and  we’re going to make sure that, when everyone is done, make sure that if you go to retrieve your soccer ball please don’t do when there are people kicking a ball anywhere near you. The 3 mats right here, lower corner is 1 point. Upper corner is 2 points. Same goes for this side. So, if you can see this jacket, these three mats, lower point is 1, upper corner is 2. The white wall from the mat to just below the banners is 3 points. Ok? Your partner is going to keep track of your points. Remember your points guys because who ever has the most points will get a prize but everybody else I promise you you will get candy ok? So grab your partner, you’re going line up on this green line. You have distance! I will be timing it. You guys have 1 minute! 1 Minute!

  • Me: Just the corners, yes. Ready? Yeah,we’re going, set, we’re going to start on this side. One at a time guys. We’re starting on this side. Go!

  • Me: Yeah, when it’s your turn. Keep track of your points, keep track of your points! And go. Keep going, keep going, keep going!
  • Me: Nope, if anything hits the banner it does’t count guys.
  • Me: 2 points! Alright 1 rotation through again, 1 more rotation through again then you’ll switch partners. Keep in mind you’re technique, technique, techniques! Kick the ball with your laces. Yes.
  • Me: Some power? She’s got a lot of power. Nice Kick! No, can’t hit the banner guys. No, it has to be above. There you go, nice hit, nice it. Alright, retrieve your soccer balls, switch partners! Remember your scores guys, remember your points!
  • Me: Alright, are we ready? Next partner up! Go ahead!
  • Me: Christine, Christine, Christine! Don’t retrieve your soccer ball till everyone’s kicked the soccer ball.
  • Me: No, no bonus points for hitting it
  • Student: Any points for hitting the backboard?
  • Me: No points for the backboard guys. We’re working on Specific Targets.

  • Me: Retrieve your soccer ball! Alright, everyone grab your soccer ball? One last shot real quick, one last shot real quick!
  • Me: Come on Christine, you’ve got it!
  • Me: Alright, go ahead. 3 points!
  • Me: Alright, grab your soccer ball, bring it into me please! Hold your soccer ball in your hand, hold your soccer ball in your hand. Hold your soccer ball in your hand, thank you. Bring it in, bring it in! Please come in a little closer, I don’t bite, I promise. OK, does (stutter) everyone feel a little bit better about their shooting technique after this lesson? Can anyone give me a few cue points on how to,  how to shoot a soccer ball properly?

  • Student: Laces, not toes.
  • Me: Laces, not toes.
  • Student: Using a pendulum swing.
  • Me: Pendulum swing. Anyone else? What?
  • Student: Lock your ankle.
  • Me: Lock your ankle, very good. Thank you guys, I hope you had a great time. Heart Rate, Ready? 1,2,3,4,5,6. Alright guys, Thanks.

Reflection

Looking over the written lesson, the video and the actual script of my teaching, you can tell that there were differences. In my original lesson plan for the game lollipop, we were supposed to be in the SERC with actual soccer goals. Students were supposed hit the crossbar of the goals and to get as many points as possible. Due to changes in location and unavailable equipment, there was a complete change in script and of the game of lollipop. The game went better than expected given literally last minute changes and lack of equipment. The intro, demonstration, and the skills part of the lesson were very similar to what I had written down for the shooting lesson. I'm not good at scripting out word for word what I'm going to say. I script all the details of what is going to happen in the lesson step by step, but when it comes to the actual verbiage, I'm better with talking on the fly. Especially when I know what is happening, the rest just falls into place. Watching the video of the lesson, I could tell that I was nervous because of my stuttering and my constantly saying ok. I had kept to the lesson plan for the most part, and improvised for the changes. Overall, I was happy with how it went, how close I was to the script and was able to keep it together despite my nerves. I think that it's better to have a skeleton of the script then to know wordier word so it comes more natural to you then to sound robotic. You need to know what you are doing but each day, each lesson and each situation is different, changes, unexpected, and you don't know what you will be walking into that day when you go to teach. As I said, overall, very well lesson.

Heart Rate Monitor & Pedometer Project

Looking at the data of the pedometer steps, it makes sense when compared to the activity that was taught for the day. Activities like Prison dodgeball and continuous kickball had a high number of steps because we were moving consistently, where as softball and baseball activities were low steps due to standing around learning the proper technique. The accuracy of my heart rate is questionable because we were lacking the technology of heart rate monitors. The heart rates were accurate in the sense that the more steps that I took the higher my heart rate was. My highest heart rate was in Snowball tag where I took just over 600 steps, and in in Prison dodgeball where I took over 800 steps, my heart rate was only 120. It should have been higher then the snowball tag, but due to probably miss counting, it was rendered inaccurate. Having a heart rate monitor would have definitely made for less error in a situation like this. Overall the data reflects what it should as far as heart rate to steps to activity ratio. The pedometers seemed to be working properly in counting the amount of steps in each lesson.

North Shore Surfing

Dragon's Breath Zipline

The video shows tourists going down a zipline in Haiti. It is the world's longest zip line over water. I like how the video shows different points of  view of the zip line experience. You get to see the view of everyone going down the zip line, then you see the adventure from a first person perspective. Its a great video, and it's something that is on my bucket list of things to do.

Awesome compilation of extreme sports!
